Where should we do our engagement photos?

My clients are always asking for suggestions on where in the Black Hills area they should go for their engagement photos. That's why I've put together this list of my top 7 absolute favorite places to photograph couples in the Rapid City & Black Hills area, so that you don't have to waste your time looking for that perfect location!

1. Falling Rock

For the adventures

A Beautiful overlook of the Black Hills with a short 5 minute hike. From here you can see a winding river, lots of pine trees, and epic cliff sides. I recommend this spot to those looking for a more adventures location and are not to afraid of heights!

2. Little Elk Creek Trail

Great for Hiking

Awesome hiking trail following a creek as it winds through the canyon. With magnificent white canyon walls and mini waterfalls this canyon is gorgeous for photos anytime of the year! It is also just a great 3.5 mile hike up to a small lake and campground.

3. Sylvan Lake

In Custer State Park

Located just inside Custer State Park, Sylvan Lake is beautiful for sunrises, sunsets, and everything in between. A short hike around the lake gives you lots of different views and overlooks perfect for your couple photos.

4. Canyon Lake Park:

Within Rapid City limits

If you don't want to drive far, Canyon Lake Park is a beautiful place within Rapid City limits. There is even a short walking trail that follows the stream with great shade provided by tall trees.

5. Horse Thief Lake:

Close to Mt. Rushmore

This glass like lake is beautiful for sunrise & sunsets. With camping available near by you could even stay out there before or after your photo session! It is also only 5 minutes away from Mt. Rushmore if you have time to snap a few pics with the famous rock heads!

6. Downtown Rapid City:

If you like a more urban feel

If you like a more urban look, downtown is a great place for pictures! Art Alley is always changing with new art from local artists. There are some great local shops for ice cream or cookies, and the parking garage has a great view of main st. square and other iconic downtown sights

7. Grassy fields:

If you love the Sunkissed prairie

As you leave Rapid City going east towards Sioux Falls there are lots of open grassy fields. These can make for some absolutely gorgeous photos as the sun begins to set behind the hills. I don't have a specific location for this one, as construction has started to take over my previous go to spot.

Bonus Location:

The Badlands:

Not in the Black Hills, but super epic!

I love going to Bandlands National Park! It is a amazing location for all types of photos, but especially for engagement pics. There are some awesome hikes to incredible views, or if you don't love to hike there are some great backdrops right off of the road.
